Could this signal the return of the R? Volvo has teased a new version of its S60 sport sedan decked out in tuning company
Polestar’s trademark bright blue and adorned with the Polestar badge.
The rumor mill has been abuzz with rumblings of a new high-performance model from Volvo and Polestar, but until now,
nothing had been confirmed. While this shadowy teaser photo doesn’t tell us much, we can see that the basis for the new car
will, in fact, be the S60 R-Design. The electric-blue model is wearing the same revised lower front fascia as the R-Design, but
appears to wear blacked out mirror caps and a new wheel design. The 2012 S60 R-Design already uses a Polestar chip to
achieve the 25-hp bump over the 300 hp found in the stock S60 T6.
Polestar said in a release that the creation of the S60 Polestar was in response to the enthusiastic the C30 Polestar Concept
received when it was introduced in 2011. But, ulike the C30, Polestar expects to usher its modified S60 into production.
Expect the S60 Polestar to be built in limited quantities, though we don’t yet know exactly how limited – or at what price.
“Whether there will be more cars built is an open question. First of all we want to get feedback on this first prototype,” Polestar
marketing director Hans Bååth said in a prepared release.
Currently, a 2012 S60 R-Design starts at $43,825 with destination and the Polestar chip available on other Volvo models
costs either $1495 for T6-equipped cars or $1295 for cars with the T5.
The S60 Polestar will make its official debut next weekend and the Gothenburg City Arena TTA series race.
Volvo and Polestar have yet to release any further information, but we can hope that the tuning shop will crank up the S60′s
power to a similarly ludicrous 400-plus-hp, as it did with the C30 concept.
